Beyond Two Souls Review

now i love a good modern shooter, but everynow and then, it’s nice to go back and play a classic. contra is a fine example of a side scrollingshoot em up. but it’s actually a lot more than that! this game has a lot of variety, switchingbetween side scrolling and top down shooting. just like double dragon, it’s probably bestknown as an nes game- but was created in 1987 by konami for the arcades. you play as bill and lance- obvious clonesof schwarzenegger and stallone. and speaking of movies, this game came outthe year after james cameron’s aliens- and

the influence is obvious, especially towardsthe end of the game. so onto the gameplay. it’s very much about pushing forwards fast. you don’t just jump- you spin all over likea war machine gymnast. and you mow down a tonne of enemies in notime at all. within the first second of playing, you’vekilled two people. you can shoot in eight different directions, meaning that no one on the screen is safe. to shoot on the diagonals, you have to bemoving forward- so you’re rarely standing still.

there’s isn’t any careful sniping in thisgame! you do get a range of different weapons though, like the spread shot. the swirly gun. and the lazer. eventually you enter the enemies’ base. these sections switch perspective as you entera 3d maze. although, really there more like a corridor. you need to shoot the small circles on thewall, ideally as quickly as possible to kill everything on the screen and progress.

there are some bosses to fight, as well assome minibosses. these cars are a pain in the ass- with thestandard gun you’re gonna give your fingers blisters trying to take these out in time. phew! that was close. it’s really not that long of a game and canbe completed in around twenty minutes. however this is easier said than done. the game gets extremely difficult during thefinal alien nest section and is going to take a lot of practice if you want to do it withoutdying.

it’s a game that’s fun to try and master. to help you out, you do have the arcade archiveoptions. you can remove the limits on the number ofcontinues you get. you can up your starting number of lives. and you can turn on the rapid fire ability-giving your thumbs a much needed break. there’s also a few different ways of playing. hi-score mode, where you don’t get any continues. caravan mode, where you only get five minutesto get a high score. although i still don’t quite know why it’scalled caravan mode.

there’s even the option to play the originaljapanese version. whats’ the difference between this and theu.s? just the title screen- everything else isexactly the same, so it’s kind of pointless. so that’s contra! old school, alien blasting fun! thanks for watching! enjoyed the video? then subscribe to a’s gaming moments for moreweekly video game reviews.
